Here’s why drinking lemon water in the morning is one of the easiest and most effective health hacks.
Although Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston all tout its benefits, drinking lemon water in the morning is anything but new.
The practice dates back to ancient Egypt where, around 500 AD, Egyptians developed a lemonade they called “qatarmizat,”a drink the Pharaoh and the royal family made with lemon juice and water.
From preventing wrinkles and increasing energy to quelling anxiety and stress, lemon water seems to be an all-star when it comes to jumpstarting our health.
But is all of the hype warranted?
Here are some proven benefits of drinking lemon water in the morning, backed by science.
5 Science-Backed Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water in the Morning
One lemon contains approximately 30 mg of Vitamin C. To give that some context, one orange contains about 50 mg. Pair a cup of orange juice with a warm cup of water with lemon and you’ll be even better prepared to ward off any germs that come your way throughout the day. Add some raw, local honey, and you’ll be especially ready to combat colds and allergies.
Why drink lemon water first thing in the morning, rather than just in the afternoon or at night? Because the Vitamin C in it helps your body absorb other nutrients and vitamins throughout the day.
In addition to Vitamin C, like many citrus fruits and fruits that grow on trees, lemons contain flavanoids, phytonutrients that prevent against diseases, such as cancer and chronic conditions, such as diabetes.
Revitalizes your skin
Vitamin C enhances the production of collagen, which helps makes up a large part of our skin, nails and hair.
A long-chain amino acid, collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies. Our skin relies on collagen for elasticity and strength. The more we have, the healthier our skin is. Unfortunately, collagen production slows down with age — making drinking lemon water in the morning even more important!
Although many of the benefits of drinking lemon water come from the lemon itself, many come from the water alone. Just increasing your water intake in the morning – with or without lemon – moisturizes your skin from the inside out, helping to prevent wrinkles and calm skin inflammation.
Supports weight maintenance
Is lemon water a miracle weight loss tonic? No. But can it help your metabolism function more efficiently? Absolutely.
Here’s how it works: Although many studies claim that drinking lemon water and lemon water cleanses can help you detox and lose weight, the reality is that our bodies are great at detoxing on their own! However, our metabolism does function best when we are hydrated, which most of us aren’t. Additionally, although our bodies can get rid of toxins on their own, the acid in lemon does help aid digestion.
So essentially, drinking lemon water in the morning can help you maintain your ideal weight, albeit indirectly.
Boosts energy and mood
Even mild dehydration can make us feel tired and weak, and can cause everything from headaches to joint pain. Drinking more water can help you feel better overall, boosting your energy and mood.
Additionally, studies show that the scent of lemon has a positive effect on our mood. In one study, participants who smelled lemon experienced a drop in their stress hormone levels.
Inflammation itself is not harmful, but rather the body’s way of protecting us. For instance, if you slam your finger in a door, your finger will become inflamed and swell as part of the healing process.
However, a growing body of research suggests that chronic inflammation is linked to many serious diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, heart disease and more. Lemon juice dissolves uric acid, which can cause joint pain and inflammation.
Paired with other anti-inflammatory foods such as tumeric and Omega-3 fatty acids, the vitamins and nutrients in lemon can help reduce inflammation in your body, helping you prevent disease and feel better overall.
How to Drink Lemon Water
- 32 ounces of warm water
- 1 organic lemon
First, roll the lemon around on the counter under your palm, placing some pressure on it. This will help make it easier to get as much juice out of the lemon as possible.
Next, use a zester to zest the outside of the lemon. The lemon peel contains even more vitamins than the juice itself! You can freeze the zest to use when you’re cooking, or add it to oil or lotion to create a soothing, aromatic moisturizer.
Cut the lemon in half. Placing one hand cupped below it to catch any seeds, squeeze it into your 32 ounce pitcher.
Try mixing the following into the water for added benefits and taste:
- Agave Nectar
- Piece of ginger
- Edible roses or flowers
- Splash of coconut water
- Herbal tea bag
- Cinnamon stick
